Day 81: Rug making

Time: One hour
Listening to: Parks and Rec

I squeezed in some time of rug making this evening during some TV watching. It is going slower now that I'm getting to the outer part of the hula hoop!

Day 73 and 74: Rug making--on a hula hoop!

Time: A couple hours
Listening to: Nothing!

I saw this awesome tutorial on making a  rug on a hula hoop! I (almost) instantly went out and bought a hula hoop and went to work! I am doing mine a bit differently than the tutorial--mostly in that I didn't knit my yarn before weaving. It is nice not having to weave a giant ball of yarn through the tiny spaces and instead just tie the yarn when I need a new piece. Much easier to weave with!

Here is my progress:

Day 22: Rug Making

Time: 2 1/2 hours
Listening to: Modern Family

I'm loaning my loom to a friend on Wednesday so I thought I'd get one last rug in before we part. I had a pink sheet and a red sheet just begging to be used...so a Valentine's day rug it is!

Day 8: Rug Making

Time: Four hours?
Listening to: Pawn Stars (watching)

I got a little crazy with rugs today. I finished the first one I was working on and looked over and saw the large pile of cut up sheets I had still on my floor. So I asked myself, why not make another one? So I did! Tonight! My back is a bit sore and so are my fingers, but now I have two finished rugs!

My two rugs! They are 20" x 35."

I've never done two different color layers before. A fun mix!

My Neapolitan rug! The inner color is actually a green/pink pattern.

Anybody looking to buy a rug? I have two just looking for a home... :)

Day 6: Rug Making

Time: 1 hourish
Listening to: Mariokart Wii

A couple years ago I signed up for a rug making class at Hobby Lobby. Along with the how-to we also got to take home our own loom. I've made about six rugs, I think. I haven't made one for a while but got the itch to make one again!

It is a pretty long process. It begins with cutting two inch strips of fabric. The best way to keep the cost down is to use old bedsheets. It takes about two sheets to make one rug. The best tool you can own during this part of the process is a rotary cutter and a cutting mat. They are ahhh-mazing.
My piles of 2-inch strips!

First you add the vertical lines in as the base of your rug. After that is secure you begin the weaving process by adding in the horizontal pieces. Here is a look at what I have done so far.

Only hours and hours more to go!
